Multidisciplinary Clinical Research Center
in Musculoskeletal Diseases

James N. Weinstein, DO, MS - Director, MCRC

Professor and Chair, Department of Orthopaedics
Director, The Dartmouth Institute of Health Policy & Clinical Practice
(formerly the Center for the Evaluative Clinical Sciences)

Dr. Weinstein is a world-reknowned advocate for patient-centered care and research. An innovative and highly productive researcher, he is the Principal Investigator of the Spine Patient Outcomes Research Trial (SPORT), a multi-million dollar effort to determine the best treatment for three diagnoses for low back pain.

The Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center was the first hospital in the nation to have an institution-wide shared decision-making center, and was initiated by Dr. Weinstein.

Dr. Weinstein recognizes that education is paramount to improving the health care system. Envisioning his orthopaedic residents having the same exposure to the idea-rich environment of the program in Evaluative Clinical Sciences that he'd had, Dr. Weinstein established an optional 6-year residency program to enable those residents who wish to become clinician-researchers the opportunity to receive a Master's degree in the evaluative clinical sciences. Last but not least, he sits on the Board of Directors of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, overseeing the education of orthopaedists nationwide.
