Orthopaedic Surgeons' Opinions About Patients' Decision Aids for
Elective Surgery for Herniated Disc / Spinal Stenosis
The
overall objective of the proposed research is to provide empirical
data that can guide: a) the valid design of future “real-world”
evaluative studies of newly-developed patients‘ decision aids for
elective back surgery; and b) the clear identification of
implementation / dissemination strategies most likely to support the
incorporation of well-validated decision aids into regular
orthopaedic surgical practice. Ultimately, these efforts could, in
turn, help to foster greater degrees of patient involvement in the
communication and decision processes surrounding elective spine
surgery, higher levels of physician-patient satisfaction with these
deliberative transactions, and, to the extent that patients’
informed preferences for care are met, improved overall outcomes of
care.
